toward the end of the hogan trial harder made a weird move. he dropped one of the claims that would have enabled gawker to pay out from its insurance policies. they would get less money, but it would come directly from gawker.

the move only made sense if you dropped the assumption that harder was acting in his client (hogans) best interest, and replaced it with the more evident truth that the goal was to bankrupt the company above all else. they were trading less money for a higher chance of a kill. they wanted a scalp not a few measly tens of millions of dollars.

in the abstract you could say “maybe hogan was just really pissed”, and he surely was at points, but by this point in the trial the transcripts of him being racist as fuck had leaked. the WWE disappeared him from every event, website, video game, and even toys almost instantly. he had already claimed to be “nearly bankrupt” a few years before. nearly bankrupt and with no career or income, it made no sense at all that hogan wouldn’t go for the money.

this weird move made it too obvious, so people finally started asking the right questions and other people finally started talking. it quickly broke that hogan was just a front, a lucky shot in thiel’s multi-pronged legal ddos attack against gawker.

all this is why its not entirely crazy to ask the question right now... could Jim Spanfeller and the crew running G-O Media right now really be this unbelievably dumb and bad at their jobs? or, are they doing the most thinly plausible shit they can get away with to finish ruining and eradicating any last trace of gawker (which splinter and theconcourse were)?

if you naively look at their behavior as just dolts being dolts its baffling how they got here and how they expect to make any return on this disaster.

if you say, “how could thiel finish his petty vendetta?” a perfectly plausible answer is: dump some money into a P/E firm and make the stipulation that they “get rid of the political stuff” (in an election year!).

sure its crazy talk but has any part of this not been crazy?
